Knowledge and experience are two assets that we have and that constitute an essential part of our professional and personal performance.

For those of us who have lived 60 or more years, they can be two accumulated resources of great value, especially if at this stage of life we want stay active and productive, since we can share and monetize them.

It is likely that some of us have given courses, talks or training to members of our work team or to personnel of the company in which we work, so that we can identify topics or areas in which our knowledge and experience have already been recognized.

The opportunity that the internet opens up for us is that those issues that we know and master can now be put in digital format to make them accessible to many people, to whom that knowledge is interesting and useful, and that can produce income every time someone use them.

Therefore, taking an online course is the best way to share our knowledge and experience.

In this article I want to inform you, in a general way,

  • What online courses consist of
  • The size of the market,
  • The benefits it offers for those who seek knowledge and for those who offer it,
  • Some of the niches with the highest demand as well
  • The first steps to create it.

My goal is to give you the elements so that, if you have knowledge and experiences to share, you can make the decision to do it through an online course.

Unlike some of the face-to-face courses that we may have given, taking an online course is creating a learning experience for thousands of people, with all the variety of resources that the digital environment allows and without the limitations of the place or the moment, in which it should be given.

An online course can incorporate, in addition to texts and reading material, video presentation, audios with interviews or stories related to the content.

An online course can include interaction with the instructor via chat, scheduled face-to-face sessions or email, and, in many courses or workshops, it may have assignments or exercises, in downloadable Excel or Pdf sheets, to apply the concepts learned.

An online course can be taken from any device with internet access, that is, it can be viewed on a pc, laptop, tablet or even on a smartphone.

The main job of the creator of the course is to identify its audience, define its topic, structure it and create interesting and useful content for those to whom it is directed.

In this process, on the web he will find platforms that offer facilities to present it, promote it, sell it and control its results.

The big advantage is that the creator develops his course once, charge a price each time someone takes the course, and he can sell it many times over years, earning recurring passive income.

Currently this market reaches more than $ 200 billion U.S. dollars and the projections before the pandemic was that by 2026 it would reach $400 billions, although the prolonged confinement and temporary closure of schools and universities is accelerating its growth.

These numbers show the size of the demand for online knowledge.

An activity with great growth in the current circumstances has been the undertaking of new businesses, however, universities do not have careers for entrepreneurs or businessmen, their programs are aimed at producing employees and in many cases for careers in the process of disappearance or with content outdated.

All of the above, creates every day greater demand for practical and useful knowledge on the part of those who enter the labor market, those who wish to expand their professional knowledge or those who have been displaced by automation and need to learn different professional capacities.

• According to the Chapman Alliance, half a day of classical training is equivalent to one hour of an e-learning course.

• The barrier to entry has been lowered considerably. Creating and marketing a course has never been easier.

As you can see, there are a large number of topics within these niches to identify which one best suits our knowledge and experience and it is up to us to particularize and differentiate the specific topic that we would be interested in developing in our course.

If you have seen it feasible to give an online course, because you have knowledge and experiences to share and you also see the possibility of generating recurring passive income with this option, I show you some initial steps to start your project.

  1. 1. Choose the course topic

Find a course idea on a topic that interests you and can teach.

You can create a course based on your personal skills, hobby or passion

Consider something that people frequently consult you about

Think about an experience of personal growth that you have lived and that can be of use to other people in a similar situation.

Don’t think that you have to be an expert on the subject in order to share your knowledge, think that you know more than someone who is starting and direct your course to that group of people who still do not know what you, on the subject.

  1. 2. Identify your audience and how they will benefit from your course

To what type of audience is the knowledge you want to share necessary and valuable.

What change will the student experience and what benefits will obtain, whoever takes your course.

This is essential, because it is the promise that will awaken the interest of your potential students and it is the goal that will guide your work on selecting content and the instruments to be incorporated.

  1. 3. Plan and design your course

Start the process of shaping the scope and structure of your course, which will allow you to identify the parts that compose it, the subtopics to be covered, the resources to use, and also know the resources, sites and platforms on the network, which can be used in the process as well as the requirements or standards to be taken into account.

In order to know the facilities, they offer you, the scope of functions that each platform has and the requirements and costs of each one, I recommend that you mainly explore these three: Kajabi, Teachable and Thinkific.

This process should be done accompanied by people who master this medium, which will save time and effort and expand your chances of a good result.

For this purpose, I have visited different sites and one that I consider can be very useful for someone who is starting this process and has no experience in online business, is Mary Fernández’s www.persuasion-nation.com  because it not only offers learning through a course, as there are multiple sites, but rather engages with you and accompanies you in the process from scratch until you get results.

  1. 4. Validate your course

Perhaps this is the most important step, before starting, since the success of your course and the recovery of the resources of time and money invested may depend on a good validation.

A first point to validate is if there is a market for the subject of your course and if there is, how big it is and how competitive it is.

A query on Google or YouTube can give you an idea about it and you can also search specialized platforms for selling courses such as Udemy, Teachable and Thinkific and find out in greater detail, the number of courses on the subject and how many people have used them and the result of the reviews.

Whether there are courses for that topic or not, many or few, all that information will be important to validate your topic.

If the topic you want to offer is not in demand, think well if you should invest in creating or opening a market with your first attempt or if it is better to participate in a niche that you know, that is already in demand, looking there for your differentiation.

If your topic is in demand and has significant competition, validate if the focus of your course or the content has contributions or differentiated added value that can make you competitive.

Another resource to validate your course, can be friends from the environment or the type of audience to whom it is directed with whoever you can, via email, share the structure and planned content of your course and ask for their support to know if they would be of interest to them. what observations and suggestions they would make and if so, how much would they be willing to pay for the results your course offers.

With these first steps, you will have an idea about the value of your proposal, your possibilities of contribution to your target audience and a better idea of the time and effort that it will take you to achieve it. The next step is to get started.

It is certain that as a result of your professional and life experience, you have a valuable asset of knowledge that you can share through an online course and if you want to share it, there has never been a better occasion to do so, due to the facilities that the internet has provided, by the growing demand for online knowledge, and by the income that a product made once and sold tens, hundreds or thousands of times, can produce.

The benefits that online training offers for those who want to learn and train and for the creators of courses who offer their knowledge, far exceed the offer of face-to-face training as confirmed by current market figures and its rate of growth.

The niches and the variety of topics that are in great demand, cover practically all areas of knowledge and surely our experience fits into some of them. We just have to give it the personal specificity that distinguishes us and allows us to clarify the value we provide.

Once the topic has been selected and well validated, we are ready to begin the creation of our course and begin the work of design, structuring and development of the content, for which there are different platforms and resources to carry out the course and to present it and market it on the internet, of which we can choose the ones most related to our profile and needs.

We have the opportunity to reactivate, leave a mark, improve lives and make this work productive by generating passive income with one or more courses,

Let’s take advantage of it!
